Immunology is associated with infectious diseases through the study of host/pathogen relationships that enable us to control the pathogens we have had to deal with. This association will continue and enable us to effectively combat the emergence of new infectious agents in the future. The same applies to cancer, with the advent of immunotherapy as a first-line treatment for a large number of cancers. Recently, a strong link has been discovered between our bacterial agents, commonly known as the microbiota, and the formation of an effective immune system. Dysfunctions of the immune system will also be discussed. All these elements give the MIDI programme a strong pedagogical sense that will enable future graduates to play an active part in tomorrow's societal problems in health biology. Locally, the MIDI programme relies on lecturers from renowned research laboratories such as the Institute for the Advancement of Biosciences (IAB), the Structural Biology Institute (IBS), the Translational Research and Innovation in Medicine and Complexity Laboratory (TIMC), in interaction with the University Hospital Centre.
In addition, external lecturers representing more than 15 different universities complete the teaching team. This diversity enables students to establish their first professional network.
Organisation of the course
The first semester is devoted to lectures given by researchers or lecturers who are national/international experts in their field. These lectures provide a high level of expertise in the most recent research conducted in microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology. Individual presentations of recent publications covering these fields help to perfect the understanding and presentation of scientific work. This exercise also enables students to develop a critical mind.
The second semester is devoted to a 6-month internship in an academic or private laboratory, which enables students to apply the knowledge acquired throughout their university course. The internship may be in a laboratory in Grenoble or elsewhere. The only restriction is that the research subject must be relevant to the MIDI course. The internship will conclude with a presentation to a committee of experts.
